Care and Maintenance

Vacuuming:

Regular vacuuming, at least once a week, with a regular suction-type vacuum cleaner will ensure that your new rug lasts longer and looks better. Ideally, you should vacuum on both sides every two weeks. Regular vacuuming also prevents grit and dirt filtering down into the pile where it can accumulate and damage the fibre, increasing wear and tear. Shedding of fibre is a natural phenomenon with all wool rugs, however, longer stray fibres should be cut even with the rug’s surface and never pulled. If your rug has fringes, do not vacuum these as the fringe may pull and ravel. We also suggest a regular rotation of the rug, especially if exposed to direct sunlight as this bleaches the yarn. Rotation also helps the rug wear more evenly. Above all, never beat a rug as this can damage the backing and loosen threads.

Spills and Stains:

The basic rule for dealing with little accidents is to act fast. Do not rub, but gently dab up the excess spill with a clean white cloth or paper towel. Never rub as this can spread the stain. Once the stain is contained, work from the outer edge to the centre applying appropriate carpet cleaner with a clean cloth. You should avoid soaking the effected area as this can spread the stain. Once clean, pat excess moisture with paper towels and allow to dry. On stubborn stains repeat the process until they are removed. If stains or spills prove impossible to shift, use a professional cleaning company. Remember, never use a spot cleaner on wool as these can ‘set’ the stain, making it impossible for even the professionals to remove.
